2019 Annual USPTO National Summer Teacher Institute

Teachers work in groups and begin the innovation process and outline a plan for the week.

Teachers will have access to the Maker Space located at the Area 49 Maker Space (Atkins Library 2nd Floor) each day from 4 pm to 8 pm. Materials, supplies, and equipment to build prototypes will also be available.

Alternatively, teams may choose to work at the Hilton Charlotte Hotel.

Innovation Plan may include the following:
  1. Brainstorming ideas and topics for invention project
  2. Selecting a theme or topic or problem to be solved
  3. Applying the principles of intellectual property (IP), innovation, and the engineering design process
  4. Creating a design or sketch of a prototype (e.g. 3-D printed prototype )
  5. Incorporating the principles of Intellectual Property (IP) (patents, trademarks, copyright, trade secrets) as elements of the invention and innovation process. (e.g. searching the patent and trademark databases to address the question "Does my invention exist?" or "Does my trademark exist?")
  6. Developing a marketing strategy and planning for a 3-minute pitch of your invention to be delivered by your team on Friday morning in the Lucas Room at the  Cone University Center .
